Our impact

At CISWO, we are committed to delivering a wider range of support than ever before, constantly adapting our services to meet the changing needs of those we work with. Our Impact Report highlights the vital services and meaningful interventions we have provided, showcasing the real impact on former coal miners, their families, coalfield communities, and mining charities.

Andrew & Gillian’s story

CISWO’s personal welfare service provided Andrew and his wife Gillian with support that improved their quality of life. With Andrew facing mobility challenges that limited outings and shared activities, CISWO funded a motorised power pack for his manual wheelchair. This addition allowed Gillian to take him on trips more easily, enabling them to enjoy time together outside the home and overcome previous physical barriers.

“Thank you so much for giving my lovely husband, Andrew, and me the opportunity for an easier journey with the new battery fitting. You’ve been amazing, thinking outside the box and seeking solutions.”

Supporting Bedlinog Miners’ Welfare

CISWO partners with mining charities to help them sustain community hubs. Bedlinog Miners’ Welfare Association reached out to CISWO when their pavilion fell into disrepair. Through financial grants and governance support, CISWO helped the association renovate the space, adding essential facilities and ensuring it was fit for community use.

“We are extremely grateful for the grant funding that brought an unused building back into community use, enabling social and educational activities for residents.”

John’s journey to friendship

The loss of a loved one can lead to deep social isolation, as it did for John after the passing of his wife. He came to CISWO’s Thornycroft Centre seeking connection and support. There, he found new friendships and a warm, inclusive environment that helped him navigate grief and rediscover a sense of belonging.

“The staff create a warm, welcoming environment where individuals feel valued and cared for, fostering a true sense of community.”

Supporting Jessica with her veterinary studies

CISWO is dedicated to supporting the children of former mineworkers in pursuing higher education. Jessica, whose father worked at Grimethorpe colliery before his passing, turned to CISWO for help with her studies at the Royal Veterinary College. CISWO’s educational grants enabled her to afford vital course materials and focus on her learning.

“Without CISWO and their support, I would not have gotten this far in my degree.”
