How CISWO’s Personal Welfare Team helped Wayne and Pamela find the right support

When former miner Wayne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he and his wife Pamela suddenly found themselves facing a series of difficult decisions and practical challenges. From understanding what support was available to adapting to changing mobility and wellbeing needs, the couple needed clear guidance at a time when life felt increasingly uncertain.

That is when they turned to CISWO’s Personal Welfare Service, which provides tailored support to former mineworkers and their families across mining communities.

CISWO’s Personal Welfare Team worked closely with Wayne and Pamela to understand their situation and identify the help they needed. The team supported them with benefit applications, mobility needs, home adaptations, housing enquiries, and referrals to local Parkinson’s and carers’ support groups.

Practical help when it mattered most

By helping the couple access the right information, services and practical assistance, CISWO was able to make a meaningful difference during a particularly challenging period in their lives.

You’ve been wonderful to us; we couldn’t have managed this past year without you. We can’t stop telling everyone about the help we have received.

Wayne and Pamela’s feedback is a powerful reminder of the difference that timely, compassionate support can make. For people living with complex health and wellbeing challenges, having someone to explain options, coordinate help and advocate on their behalf can make difficult circumstances feel more manageable.

Through its Personal Welfare Service, CISWO continues to provide a lifeline for former mineworkers and their families, helping people access financial assistance, explore housing solutions, adapt their homes, and connect with specialist support networks. Wayne and Pamela’s story shows the importance of getting the right support at the right time and the lasting difference it can make.

If you or someone you know is a former mineworker or family member who may benefit from support, CISWO’s Personal Welfare Team can help you understand what assistance may be available.
