CISWO – The Coal Mining Charity – has helped secure £32,000 in grant funding to support essential roof refurbishment works at Cortonwood Miners’ and Community Welfare Scheme, helping safeguard the centre and ensure it can continue serving the local community.
Working closely with the trustees at Cortonwood, CISWO’s Grants Team successfully accessed £20,000 from The National Lottery Awards for All, alongside £5,000 from the Four Winds Community Fund, £2,000 from The Earl Fitzwilliam Charitable Trust, and a further £5,000 from the Bernard Sunley Foundation.
The funding has contributed towards repairing a long‑standing issue with a leaking roof, which has impacted the usability and comfort of the building. The repairs will help keep the centre warm, dry and safe, allowing community activities and sessions to continue throughout the year.
Maureen Oliver, Trustee at Cortonwood Miners’ and Community Welfare Scheme, said:
We’re incredibly grateful to CISWO and the funders for their support. Thanks to this funding, the roof repairs have now been fully completed, safeguarding our building and ensuring it remains fit for the future.
The welfare plays a vital role in our community, and completing these works means we can continue welcoming local people into a warm, dry and safe space for many years to come.
CISWO Chief Executive Nicola Didlock added:
This funding highlights the positive impact that can be achieved when we work in partnership with local trustees and charitable funders.
Cortonwood Miners’ and Community Welfare Scheme is a valued community asset, and these improvements will help protect the building, improve comfort for users, and strengthen its long‑term sustainability.
