Caring for land

Supporting recreational and community spaces

At CISWO, we are proud custodians for one of the UK’s largest estates of recreational and community land. Our estate includes football, rugby, and cricket pitches, open recreation grounds, welfare halls, and community facilities. These spaces are vital to the well-being of former coal mining communities, providing places for sport, play, cultural activities, and social connection.

Our role

Many of these spaces were originally created as part of the coal mining industry’s legacy. While over 90% of our sites are leased or managed by local charities, community groups, and other organisations, we retain a key role in supporting their sustainability.

We collaborate with these organisations to ensure the spaces are well-maintained, accessible, and meet community needs. By safeguarding these assets, we preserve their heritage while adapting them for modern use.

Our focus is on retaining land for recreational and community benefit, balancing heritage preservation with addressing local needs to enrich communities now and for future generations.

How we support and retain recreational land

  • Stewardship: We oversee the long-term care of recreational and community spaces, working with those who manage them to ensure they are protected and available for the future.
  • Investment: We invest resource and capital funds in partnership with local groups to improve and modernise facilities, from sports pitches to community hubs, so they remain accessible and relevant.
  • Guidance: We provide trustees and charities with advice on funding, governance, and planning, helping them keep these vital spaces sustainable.
  • Partnerships: We collaborate with councils, businesses, and community organisations to maximise the impact of these spaces and meet the changing needs of the communities they serve

Why it matters

In many former mining towns and villages, these spaces are more than just land and buildings—they are central to community life. They host sports teams, local events, cultural activities, and social gatherings. They provide safe places for children to play and bring people together, creating a strong sense of belonging.

These spaces also represent the rich heritage of coal mining communities. By protecting them, we honour this legacy while making sure they remain vibrant and inclusive for future generations
