The Minister for Industry in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Chris McDonald MP, visited Dodworth Miners’ Welfare to see how a major new solar energy installation, funded and supported by CISWO and partners, is already delivering financial and environmental benefits for the charity and local community.
The project includes 50 solar panels installed on the roof of the site’s 600‑capacity stand, helping to reduce energy bills and power community facilities. It was delivered through a £25,000 investment from CISWO and the Net Zero Barnsley programme, with further support via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The total project cost was £28,350, including battery storage.
CISWO’s support extended beyond funding, providing guidance on grant requirements, landlord permissions, and working with regional partners including SYMCA and Barnsley Council.
Nicola Didlock, Chief Executive of CISWO, said:
This project is a strong example of how CISWO supports former mining communities through long-term, sustainable investment. Energy bills are one of the biggest challenges facing community organisations today, and investing in solar helps clubs like Dodworth Miners’ Welfare cut costs and reinvest in their facilities and services.
The installation is expected to almost halve the welfare’s annual energy bills, delivering around £3,500 in annual financial benefit, with a further £2,500 anticipated through surplus energy sales to the National Grid. It will generate 18,920 kWh of clean energy each year, reducing carbon emissions by 3,917 kg.
Dodworth Miners’ Welfare is a key community hub supporting grassroots sport, recreational groups, brass bands and large community events. Lower running costs will strengthen its long-term sustainability.
Eric Richardson, Chairman of Dodworth Miners’ Welfare, said:
Energy costs have put real strain on the welfare for years, so the impact of these solar panels has been unbelievable. We’re already seeing a projected £3,500 annual improvement to our bottom line. As someone who spent 50 years in mining, I’m proud to see the welfare embracing modern energy solutions that secure our future.
