Education grants

Education grants

We provide grants for former mineworkers and their dependent children for the purposes of supporting them within higher education. This includes any full or part-time courses in higher education such as degree courses, and Higher National Diplomas.

Who is eligible?

Eligible applicants include those who were employed in the coal mining industry of Great Britain where they have completed the required length of service and dependant children of such former employees, where they are financially dependant on parents. Eligibility is based on need, with grants only being offered to those families where there is demonstrable low income. Students who are dependant children must be over 17 years old, and under 25 years old at the start of the academic year for which the grant is required.

When can I apply?

Applications can be submitted between 1 March and 1 December for courses starting in September of that year (in other words, up to six months prior to any course start and three months after). No applications will be considered after 1 December.

What information do I need to submit to complete my application?

You will need to complete the application form in full and also provide a copy of your student finance award and evidence of enrolment.

Jessica’s story

Jessica dreamed of becoming a vet and was thrilled to be accepted into the prestigious Royal Veterinary College, University of London. Since 2018, she has received support through CISWO’s educational grants, which have helped her on her journey.

The funding enabled Jessica to afford vital course materials and focus fully on her studies, helping her make the most of the opportunities university offered.

“CISWO has provided me with first-class support throughout my entire degree. Without their help, I wouldn’t have gotten this far. What a fantastic organisation, supporting students to achieve their dreams.”

Jessica’s story showcases how CISWO’s educational grants allow students to overcome challenges and pursue their ambitions.

The grant from CISWO provided me with the financial support I needed to focus on my studies and make the most of university life. It allowed me to take part in extracurricular activities and gain valuable experiences that improved my experience.

Helen, Mathematics student

I am very grateful to CISWO for the support extended to me as a medical student. The support from CISWO not only assisted with some of the expenses of being a university student but also provided encouragement to continue in my studies.
