CISWO provides £20,000 grant to Pontyates Miners Welfare Association for new heating system

CISWO The Coal Mining Charity, is pleased to provide the Pontyates Miners Welfare Association in the Gwendraeth Valley with a £20,000 grant to install a new, energy-efficient heating system in their welfare hall.

The new system will greatly enhance the energy efficiency of the welfare hall and creating a warmer, more inviting space for the community. As energy costs continue to rise, this essential upgrade will have a lasting impact, supporting the charity in providing a sustainable and comfortable environment for those it serves.

The Pontyates Welfare Institute, established in 1963, is a cornerstone of the local community. The hall serves as a hub for the community, hosting a variety of activities, including social events, concerts, a community café, a public library, and a local produce and craft fair.

In addition to this grant, CISWO has worked closely with the Pontyates Miners Welfare Association to secure further funding for the charity, including £45,000 from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund and £7,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund. This has enabled further improvement including high-speed internet connectivity, digital signage, a new sound system, upgraded furnishings, and enhanced the outdoor space.

Tyssul Evans, Chairman of Pontyates Welfare Association, said:

“Thank you to CISWO for all their assistance in securing several grants to improve the facilities we provide to our numerous hall user groups and associations. Together with the funding from the Levelling Up fund and National Lottery Community fund, we have been able to transform our village hall and provide far wider assistance to all hall users.”

Nicola Didlock, Chief Executive of CISWO, added:

“We are pleased to support the trustees of the Pontyates Miners Welfare Association. The hall is a vibrant hub for learning, social connection and wider community services and we are pleased that we have been able support its future development. We look forward to supporting their continued success.”
