CISWO Invests £200,000 to Secure the Future of Tylorstown Welfare Hall

CISWO – The Coal Mining Charity – has awarded a £200,000 grant to support the long‑term future of Tylorstown Welfare Hall in the Rhondda valley, safeguarding one of the region’s most significant heritage buildings and enabling its transformation into a vibrant, modern community hub.

The refurbishment project will repair and upgrade the historic fabric of the Hall, addressing long‑standing maintenance issues and improving energy efficiency to ensure the building remains fit for purpose for generations to come. Once complete, the Hall will offer flexible, accessible and sustainable spaces designed to meet the evolving needs of local residents.

Underused areas will be reconfigured to create a multi-functional youth and community room, upgraded training and meeting facilities, and enhanced spaces to support a wider range of activities and events. Accessibility improvements throughout the building will also ensure people of all ages and abilities can benefit from the revitalised venue.

CISWO Chief Executive Nicola said:

Tylorstown Welfare Hall has enormous potential to become an outstanding facility for the community and the wider Rhondda valley. Its scale and versatility mean it can support a diverse range of groups, activities and events that local people truly value.

This is exactly the kind of project we’re committed to investing in — one that provides vital community facilities while protecting and celebrating the area’s proud mining heritage.

The investment will allow Tylorstown Welfare Hall to strengthen its role at the heart of community life, supporting wellbeing, learning, culture and social connection, while continuing to honour and celebrate its rich mining heritage.

Rebecca Sullivan, Tylorstown Welfare Hall Project Director said:

We are incredibly grateful to CISWO for their generous £200,000 grant, which has been absolutely vital in moving this project forward. Their support has been instrumental in ensuring that the refurbishment of Tylorstown Welfare Hall could go ahead and be delivered as planned.

CISWO’s commitment has not only provided essential funding, but it has also given us the confidence and stability needed to bring this ambitious project to life. Their backing has played a key role in safeguarding the future of this important community building, ensuring it can continue to serve local residents for generations to come.
