CISWO helps Macmerry Miners Welfare with over £7,000 towards window upgrades

CISWO, The Coal Mining Charity, is proud to have supported Macmerry Miners Welfare with a grant for over £7,000 to improve the facility’s infrastructure and sustainability.

Over recent years, the committee at the Welfare has been working to transform the site into a vibrant and sustainable community hub for local residents.

With several essential upgrades already completed – including a new fire alarm system, intruder alarm, car park relaying, electrical recertification, kitchen improvements, and major roof repairs – this next phase focuses on replacing the original windows, which date back to around 1975.

CISWO has provide a grant of £7,020 towards replacing the aging windows at the welfare with the upgrade expected to significantly reduce energy costs and improve the building’s environmental footprint.

Stuart Fleming, president of Macmerry Miners and Community Hub said:

We’ve been working hard to modernise the welfare and make it a welcoming, energy-efficient space for our community.

“The support from CISWO and our funders has been invaluable in helping us move forward with our plans.

Nicola Didlock, CISWO Chief Executive, said:

We’re delighted to have supported Macmerry Miners Welfare in securing the funding needed to continue their transformation into a sustainable community hub.

“These improvements will help reduce energy costs and ensure the welfare remains a vital resource for local people.

The new windows are scheduled to be installed in mid-November, marking a major milestone in the Welfare’s journey toward long-term sustainability.

The CISWO grants team has also worked closely with the committee at Macmerry to secure funding from other contributors, including East Lothian Council, The Barrack Foundation, and Celsius Windows bringing in a total of over £17,000. CISWO’s grants support service helps miners’ welfare charities identify funding opportunities, strengthen applications, and build long-term sustainability.
